A Realistic Guide — No Overpromising.
Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for acne scarring available today. But results take time, require multiple sessions, and depend significantly on the depth and type of scarring you have.
Here is an honest guide to what microneedling is, what it can and cannot do, and what to expect throughout the process.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy — uses a device containing fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures trigger the skin’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
Over time, this new collagen fills in and remodels scar tissue, improving the texture and appearance of acne scars. The skin gradually becomes smoother, firmer and more even in tone.
What Types of Acne Scars Does It Treat?
Microneedling is most effective for:
- Atrophic scars — the depressed, pitted scars left by inflammatory acne. This includes boxcar scars, rolling scars and ice pick scars.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the dark marks left after spots heal.
- Uneven skin texture caused by acne damage.
It is less effective for raised hypertrophic or keloid scars.
What Results Can You Realistically Expect?
Microneedling produces gradual, progressive results. Most clients notice an initial improvement in skin texture and brightness after the first session. More significant improvement in scar depth and skin quality develops over the weeks following each treatment as collagen production continues.
For moderate acne scarring, a course of 3 to 6 sessions is typically recommended. Deeper or more severe scarring may require additional sessions. Final results continue to develop for several months after the last treatment.
What Is the Downtime?
Immediately after a microneedling session the skin will appear red and feel sensitive — similar to a mild sunburn. This typically subsides within 24 to 48 hours. Mild swelling may also occur in the first day.
Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply SPF diligently. Avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinol or acids for several days post-treatment.
Is It Safe for Pakistani Skin?
Yes — when performed correctly. Microneedling does not use heat or light energy, which means it carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to some laser treatments. It is generally considered safe for all skin tones including darker South Asian skin types.
